OMW's 5KG Spring: Wonderful!

I've always said that I prioritize functionality over aesthetics.  The Nerf Longstrike CS-6 is arguably one of the best looking blasters made to date.  Additionally, the Whiteout Series has been regarded as one of the best looking styles for a Nerf Blaster.  With the Orange Mod Works kit installed in my Whiteout Series Longstrike, you'd think I'd get all the functionality and aesthetics I could ever want, but from previous tries with the Massacre kit for the Longstrike, I was having issues with it.

While I had learned from theDocument about the single-hand priming method that they use, I felt the underlying problem with the kit was the overpowered 6KG spring.  OMW sent me a 5KG spring to replace it and is also replacing the broken breech from my previous attempts, which is nice.  I installed the 5KG spring and was delighted to see how much easier it was to prime without too much noticeable loss in power.  A single hand prime without going over the top of the blaster is more than doable with this toned-down spring.

I also recently purchased a RFLG(Rapid Fire Longstrike Grip) kit by Xplorer that was featured on Nerf Mods & Reviews.  This will actually do the same job as the single hand technique seen on theDocument but be much more comfortable to use.  I'll be using this grip on mine with the OMW Massacre kit installed.  The plan is to try out the 6KG spring and see if it's able to be used with it.  If not, I'll simply keep the 5KG spring in there and be happy with that.  Should be a neat combination between Xplorer and OMW parts on this great blaster!

  1. Great! Maybe I should get some OMW eventually...

  2. do you think it would have any bad side effects if i were to one hand prime with a 5 kg spring in semi-stock parts(brass barrel)?

    1. The main thing to watch for is warping/bending that the boltsled might do. To check and see how much "give" it has, do a single hand prime with a birds-eye view of the priming bar. If you see it wiggling or leaning a lot to one side, you've got a lot of internal bend going on and it could cause damage in the future. If there isn't much/it isn't causing a problem, you should be fine.

  3. What I'm curious to know is how well the Xplorer RFLG primes when you prime with the bar. Does it help stabilize the boltsled still? Or do you have to top-prime it to get even results?

  4. Glad to hear OMW got everything worked out for you Zook. Good to see a report on the Xplorer piece as well. Here's hoping they keep cranking innovative stuff like that out on a regular basis.

  5. Where did you contact the xplorer group to purchase their goods?

  6. ive found that if you twist the bar forward a bit while priming, its alot more even when it slides

  7. I would check your new bolt for fitment issues that may exacerbate the lug failure you had earlier. Apparently, the issue is that the feed guide/halfpipe "tongue" is slightly too long and can crash into the chamber on firing when the PT hits the plunger. There have been MANY reports of feed guides snapped off massacre bolts, and since the feed guide plays no role in transmitting priming load it is almost certain that these are impact damage. In a few cases it appears that the cracking of the feed guide near the stress concentration from the bolt lug caused cracks to spread back into the bolt until the lug broke off, as in your failed one.

This is likely an issue of polycarbonate being less elastic and harder than ABS, and thus more likely to propagate cracks than a stock bolt. Also, the original design of the LK bolt, which OMW copied mostly unaltered in the lug area, seems more prone to lug failure than any other. Many Longshot bolts routinely primed spring loads well over twice the OMW CS springs for years, with lug failures completely unknown. Recon, Raider and other CS gun bolts rarely fail in this way as well, but LK bolts have torn off the lug in several documented cases.

I would cut about 1/8" off the feed guide's tip to prevent it from hitting the chamber, and clean up the cut edge for feed reliability. That should prevent this issue from cropping up again (the detuned spring should help but could also just delay impact damage if that was in fact occurring).

    1. That's gotta be one of the most useful and informative comments I've read since I opened this blog almost a year ago. Thanks, torukmakto4! I'll try that out!

  8. This will fix your problem of one side of the bolt falling off, Stick the bolt through the gun then Wrap a little bit of electrical tape around the the metal then you should be able to put the rest of the bolt on without it falling apart easily

  10. Very much the opposite. I've got a few posts on the blog here about my continued troubles with Orange Mod Works and their Massacre kit for the Longstrike. Two Longstrike Massacre kits have broken, whether it be with the 6 or 5 kg springs.
